WHAT IS HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 3 ABOUT?
Let me quickly catch you up if you have not been following.
House of the Dragon is the prequel to Game of Thrones, set about 200 years before Daenerys and Jon Snow, when House Targaryen was at the absolute peak of its power. The show is about the civil war that tore that house apart, called the Dance of the Dragons, where two sides of the same family go to war over who sits on the Iron Throne.
Team Black is led by Rhaenyra Targaryen, who was named heir by her father, the king, but was passed over when he died.
Team Green is led by Aegon II, her half-brother, who took the throne instead.
Season 2 ended with the war beginning in earnest. Battles were fought. Dragons were lost. People died who you did not expect to die. Season 3 picks up right where Season 2 left off, and based on what the source material covers, this is the season where the war gets truly catastrophic.
HBO’s own description says the Targaryen sides are entering a war “like no other” with dragons, armies, betrayals, and power struggles all converging toward something massive. The official trailer confirms that Rhaenyra is sending new dragon riders into battle, Aemond is ruling King’s Landing with a brutal hand, and Daemon is building an army in the Riverlands. The body count is about to get significantly higher.

Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen. Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s husband and honestly, the most unpredictable character in the whole show. Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower. Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower. Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, the one-eyed prince who is genuinely terrifying every time he appears on screen.
New additions this season include multiple new dragon riders. Because when your side is losing a war and you have unclaimed dragons sitting in a pit, you start recruiting people to ride them. Some of these riders come from surprising backgrounds, and their storylines are expected to be one of the emotional highlights of Season 3.
IS IT WORTH WATCHING IF YOU DROPPED OFF AFTER SEASON 1?
Honestly, yes, but do yourself a favour and watch Season 2 first.
Season 1 was a slow burn that a lot of people found difficult to get into. Season 2 was more focused, more emotionally intense, and had some of the most talked-about moments of any show that year. If you watched Season 1 and felt it was not for you, Season 2 might genuinely change your mind.
